Here it is! My book cover for The Cards We’re Dealt. I’m really happy with it and I hope you like it too.

Today’s blog post is a quick one on what I went for in my design and why.

The book cover design for 'The Cards We're Dealt'

As I mentioned in my previous blog post on cover design, this design didn’t come that far into the design process, and it’s one I kept coming back to, even after every new and improved design.

I opted for a white background to keep things clean after playing around with textured backgrounds and colours in my other designs. If you remember the covers I used as inspiration, this is something that ‘Blue Sisters’ by Coco Mellors used, and I think it’s quite unusual. I don’t know many fiction books that have a white background, and to me it stands out.

For the typography, I went with a sans serif font to make it easy to read, and I chose all caps after not feeling happy with my previous attempts with small letters. The orange of the title really pops on the white, and I went with this colour choice after cycling through the other colours in the brushstroke background (shades of blue, yellow, pink and purple). It just ties it all in.

Speaking of the brushstroke background, the colourful paint choice is a nod to what drew me to the three covers I used for inspiration: vibrant colours and a little bit of art.

And lastly, the three silhouettes. Mark, Josh and Sadie. I had to have them on the cover somewhere, and I think this works, with the black standing out against any colour.

E-book and paperback of "The Cards We're Dealt" by Rhian MacGillivray, with black silhouettes and music notes on a blue background.

It took many hours and several attempts, but I got there. It’s simpler than some of my other designs, but I think it represents the story best.

I really enjoyed designing my book cover, and I had a lot of fun. All of this was done using Canva (I’m a huge fan!) for anyone wondering what to use for graphic design for books, blog posts, social media headers, or anything else.

You can now add The Cards We're Dealt to your shelf on Goodreads ahead of its publication in May.
